| As an eclectic musician,
I have carefully studied many styles
and instruments. I studied piano for several years, and
have a BA degree in voice from Delta State University. While at Delta State, I performed in the Chorale and Chamber Singers, which gave me experience in choral music. For my last three semesters at Delta State, I played the horn in F in its Wind Ensemble, which gave me experience with wind music. I am currently studying musicology at Louisiana State University, where I have sung in three of its choirs. Most recently, I joined a new early music group called the Baton Rouge Early Vocal Ensemble (B.R.E.V.E.) as its bass.
Earlier in my life, I arranged themes to bring them new life. This site has several examples of those early exercises in music arrangement, just for archival sake.
I compose to hear what I want to hear. My first three pieces were performed at the Delta State
University's resident accompanist's farewell performance.
These won the
2006 MIAL Music Composition award, making me the youngest to
have ever won it. Two of my next compositions, the sketches
of Mississippi, were performed at a showcase by the succeeding accompanist,
Dr. Kumiko Shimizu. The other two have been completed since
then, with all four being performed in 2008 by Lois Yu. I also have composed a few small songs for personal enjoyment.
I transcribe to help me and other
musicians understand new music. The process is very enjoyable,
and is a powerful way to understand every part of a piece.
